Workshop D: Curriculum Revolution: Tactical and Strategic Approaches for Competency Based Education in Nursing

Wednesday, September 18  |  8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Educators and administrators across all levels of nursing programs recognize the value of competency-based education (CBE) for enhancing practice-readiness in new graduates. Many, however, are unsure of how to effectively and efficiently approach integrating CBE principles into existing or newly planned curricula. Evaluating curricular emphases and critically appraising processes used to educate nurses can be daunting, but sustainable change is possible via stepwise and incremental modifications made to current models of nursing education. This workshop offers academic educators and administrators an opportunity to explore how theory driven pedagogical strategies combined with purposeful and authentic learner assessments will allow the long sought-after curriculum revolution to commence.

Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Organize nursing curricula around desired nursing competencies.
  • Appraise the usefulness of formative assessment for learner feedback and competency development.
  • Develop learning materials and choose teaching strategies that foster authentic learning.
