1J: Advancing Care Excellence in Disability and Nursing Education: Rationale and Resource

Wednesday, September 18 | 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. 


The presentation will address the imperatives and recent calls to address disability in healthcare professions education to prepare future healthcare professionals, including nurses, to be prepared to provide quality health care to persons with disability, including individuals with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). The presentation will also introduce and describe resources for nursing faculty to use to integrate disability-related content and teaching/learning experiences in their nursing curricula to ensure that nurses have the knowledge, skills and perspectives to provide quality care to persons across the spectrum of disability, including IDD.

 

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the prevalence of persons with disability
  2. Identify the barriers to quality healthcare for persons with disability and barriers to inclusion of disability in nursing education curricula, including ableism.
  3. Select resources useful to address disability in nursing education to ensure that graduates are able to provide quality care to persons with disability across the spectrum of disability, including intellectual and developmental disability
